kinit fails even after patch

["novice heimdal" <heimdal@rediffmail.com>]

I have applied the hdb-ldap.diffs and now find that the principals are stored under the ou specified.
Now when i run  ./heimdal-0.4d/kdc/kdc & 
i get           [1] 28573  
but when check the process list using ps -A
i get         
  [1]+  Exit        ./heimdal-0.4d/kdc/kdc 
that states that the kdc has started and stopped

But when i kinit using ./bin/kinit     
i get this error after being prompted for password


kinit: krb5_get_init_creds: unable to reach any KDC in realm <REALM NAME>
what could be the error ?
any  clues?
