heimdal on IRIX

I'm trying to use Heimdal on IRIX 6.5.12.  I would like users to be 
able to log in on XDM with Kerberos and be authenticated to AFS.  Using 
the afskauthlib.so that comes with OpenAFS 1.2.5 I was able to get 
telnetd to authenticate me but XDM just says "cannot log user in" or 
something like that.  I tried Heimdal and got the same thing with XDM 
but with telnetd/login it says
syslog: krb5_verify_user: Server not found in Kerberos database

Can anyone give me some ideas as to why this isn't working?  I'm most 
concerned with XDM at this point.
