Desktop Data Consolidation Approaches: How to Lower TCO, Improve Reliability, and Secure High-Growth Desktop Data

Data management is a crucial part of operations in business organizations today. Files created by individual users, if lost or damaged, can lead to serious repercussions. When these individual users store critical documents on their local hard drives, it further complicates the work of IT administrators. Consolidating files to a central data store with the latest NAS technologies provides for efficient management and protection of data. However, users prefer the efficiency and security of their My Documents folder.

Consolidating user data by using the EMCCelerraHome Directory feature is a viable solution for reducing the administrative effort in data management. This feature significantly eases administrative effort by eliminating the need to create and manage Common Internet File System (CIFS) home directory shares manually. Celerra Home Directory can also eliminate the need to create each user home directory manually. Using Celerra Home Directory shifts the responsibilities of directory and share management to the Celerra system. Furthermore, consolidating client desktop data to home directories is a prerequisite for transitioning clients to a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure.

By leveraging this feature with other Celerra capabilities, system administrators have a versatile and scalable toolset for efficiently managing and protecting ever-growing user data.
