Claude E. Shannon publishes A Mathematical Theory of
Communication
, in which he shows that all information
sources can be measured in bits per second (thinking Binary
digit
was to long, Shannon introduced the word bit), and
that a communication channel has a capacity that can be measured
in the same unit.
Thus the information flow from a source can be compared to the
channel capacity.
