Many thanks for the offer to look for info. about the kernel interface.

Spurred on by your memory of seeing something on the CD, I took another
look at the MS Developer Library and, in a corner I had not searched
properly before, found a good deal of what I need. It's actually
documented (in part) under information about writing device drivers. I'm
not sure if there is enough detail for writing a subsystem but at least
it's a start.

What I really need now is an example of a tiny Windows NT subsystem, just
to get a feel for the culture...

Subject: The Free VMS idea is getting external support...

I have recently received mail from people who want to write something
about the "Free VMS" idea. I'm not really sure yet how I should best
answer them, since this project is still just starting. I intend,
however, to answer to them during this week. Any input is appreciated.

Subject: FreeVMS? Sounds like a plan...

Hi Rich--

I noticed, with more than a little interest, the reference to Free
VMS in the comp.os.vms noosegroup. Sounds like a real good idea to
me. After all, it worked for Linus Torvaalds, why not for the VMS
constituency. Alas, I've never managed to scrounge the original
EMERALD documentation, but I do know that said project was
reasonably far along when it was killed.

Not being a programmer (at least not for nearly twenty years now)
there isn't much I can do to help you in that regard. But I may be
able to help you get some publicity. I perpetrate a newsletter
called Shannon Knows DEC and I'd be glad to give you appropriate
mention therein. I may also be able to light a fire under some of my
friends in the trade press, but that's easier said than done.

Having had some involvement with VMS--to the extent that I wrote a
book about it and spawned numerous rumours as the notorious Charlie
Matco--I'd like to be involved in one way or another with this
project. And I'd like to see it succeed!

DEC has increased the price of OpenVMS unlimited-user licenses by as
much as 40 percent over the past year. A dumbheaded idea if you ask
me. In any event, a freeware OS might help maintain--and even
attract--interest in an OS that DEC regards as little more than a
cash cow.

Drop me a line sometime. I'm at shannon@world.std.com.

cheers,

Terry S>

Richard
I caught your correspondence on Free VMS from earlier this year. I am a
writer with DEC Computing magazine (circulation 42,000) the only
dedicated title for DEC users in the UK (but independent of DEC's
corporate influence). From what I hear, I could be interested in writing
an article looking at the need for a PC implementation and what is being
done.
Of course, this would definitely come to the attention of DEC. Let me
know how you feel about this and the article.
Eric

Hi,

I say go ahead and give them an interview or something. Let them
know that we feel that VMS is a vital enough OS to deserve this
support, and we feel that if it is available as an alternative to
Linux, it will grow and prosper.
