Subject: Found something potentailly useful

I just found something via Info-Vax that might be useful for the
project. Look at ftp://131.220.161.41/pub/dcl/ There seem to be quite a
few things that emulate DCL on Unix. I didn't look into any of this
except for the README.into file. Looks interesting. Just thought I let
you know.

I've been trying to get a copy of this for weeks! Unfortunately, there
seems to be a severe (I mean, *really* severe) bottleneck between my site
in the UK and Bonn, which has made this completely impossible so far. Is
there a copy on any other sites?
Regards,

Chris.

Grr, no. It is

Sorry about that.

This material all dates from 1992; I put it on the vms sig tapes
awhile back...year or so ago now I think. It can be found there too.
(Look for "unixdcl" or some such name.)

BTW the tpu error that screwed up building emacs on the 7.1 ft releases
was fixed today.

For anyone willing to grab it from a semi-slow NT box
I've also put it on my WWW server as a single zip containing all of the
files in their compressed format. 31 files @ a total of 1.2MB.

http://acs.sunyrockland.edu/freevms/boss.zip

From my brief reading of the 4 README.*'s it seems to be much more than a
dcl for unix...

I read in comp.sys.dec that Digital was going to give out
"free, personal use, non-commercial licenses" for
TOPS-10, TOPS-20, and related layored products and
utilities for your home system.

Just fill out a simple license agreement. It also seems to
make the source available also in the wording of the agreement.

Subject: What about Hurd

With most everyone agreeing on using mach3 as a base, could
Hurd (which is based upon Mach3) be used as a starting point.
Has some intresting information available at

        http://www.cs.pdx.edu/~trent/gnu/hurd/

Using an existing OS as a jumping off point might save a lot
of work, as well as being able to share a lot of low level code
(drivers for example) until it forks too far away.
