On the FreeVMS webpage it says that developers can get accounts on
HEKLA.FREE-VMS.ORG. What's the procedure for that? I don't have any VAXen
here, and it's been a long time since i've been doing any VMS, need to get
re-accquanited. :-). Also, cross-platform development is a P.I.T.A. and it's
easier to write for VMS on VMS (I've got Linux boxes here).

The procedure is to talk with me or Robert Nydahl
<nydahl@geysir.rydnet.lyator.liu.se>

The environment on it is almost ready. It's pretty much a bare-bones
VMS machine, with not too many extra utilities on, but I'm figuring that
will change with time.

Uh, no it is a little hard for me to imagine.

You see, I have very little idea how many people are trying to use the
VMS port of CVS. I mean, I suppose I could go check how many people
are downloading the executables (last time I checked, a lot less than
other platforms), but even that only tells so much.

The terminology can be confusing (mainly because two different people
independently took the name "MacCVS" and only later realized it).

This client is called "MacCVS Pro". Please do not confuse it with
MacCVS (also known as MacCVS/WinCVS) which is at
http://www.cyclic.com/cvs/soft-maccvs.html

Has somebody written a mkfs for ods2 that can run under Linux (to go with
the copying program)?

Besides me not agreeing with you about Compaq (in connection with VMS,
the rest is another story :-)), that was pretty cute.

Speaking of Compaq, we should check to make sure they don't give us any
trouble about the "VMS" in "FreeVMS".

I'd just wanted to point out at that mailing me is a bad idea right now. I'm
usually away during weekdays and I've just recently starting to catch-up reading
my email.

I hope to take a more active part after 1:st of September when I start working
on my new job at Digital (Soon to be Compaq). But on the other hand I guess
I'll take some time before I'm settled in at Digital (Soon to be Compaq). I
just keep my fingers crossed that I won't be away from home as much as I am
today.

I guess you'll tell me when you consider it ready and fit for duty, right?

Also, I'm sorry to point out that the name hekla.free-vms.org might have to be
removed and you'll have to learn to use hekla.rydnet.lysator.liu.se instead.

Some new stupid naming-rules was just invented here. There should be local
dns-names only or you'll loose your connection. But I'm working on getting a
permission to use hekla.free-vms.org anyway. Now how they're going to check-up
on all machines here beats me... but I like to play it safe anyway.

Yup. I'll probably get some time over this coming weekend...

Oh, so that silliness got through... OK, I've made the change in the
pages, removed the A record, but added a TXT record telling what has
happened (com'on, they can't forbid me to inform, can they?) (and ok, so
only the DNS aware people will see it, but it's better than nothing).

Some new stupid naming-rules was just invented here.

Is there a pointer to appropriate info somewhere?

I thought those listening might be interested, but from wired.com ...

This list has fallen silent once again. So, I thought I'd stir things up a
bit with a little piece of info. that came to my attention (albeit via junk
e-mail):

Check out the following URL:
http://www.of.org/rhaptel/news.html

Apparently, the Mach kernel underlies "Rhapsody", Apple's new MAC OS. This
group os advocating the porting of MAC OS X to Intel as an on-going product,
while (apparently) Apples current plans are to do a one-time port for their
V1.0, but no more.

I dunno. What do y'all think?

...and what, if anything, is happenning with FreeVMS?

(No, I haven't learned C yet - don't look for TYPE (including /TAIL) anytime
soon!)
