Subject: OpenSSL 0.9.4 and on requires Perl...
MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=ISO-8859-1
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit

Hello,

OpenSSL 0.9.4 was released two days ago, and I thought it should work
with no problem, because all tests worked for me. Well, what a fool I
am, it seems like [.CRYPTO.OBJECTS]OBJ_DAT.H doesn't come with the
distribution. It's expected to get built with the rest of the
compilation. That in itself shouldn't be a problem, except the way to
build OBJ_DAT.H is through a Perl script.

I've taken a look at that script, to check if it would be easy to
translate to DCL. No such luck. So, unless I have a true brainstorm and
actually do something like that, this means that from version 0.9.4 and
on, building OpenSSL requires Perl. It does now (see below to know what
you need to do today).

What I want to know is, how acceptable is this? To the folks with a web
server, this shouldn't be too much of a problem, you're expected to have
Perl anyway :-). But what of all the others? From what I've gotten when
reading comp.os.vms, the VMS community tends to be somewhat apprehensive
to install more "free stuff" than absolutely necessary.

Comments?

What do do right now:

When you have downloaded and unpacked OpenSSL 0.9.4, you have to do the
following before you do the usual "@makevms ...":

     $! Make sure you're in the OpenSSL source directory
     $ set def [.CRYPTO.OBJECTS]
     $ perl obj_dat.pl < objects.h > obj_dat.h
     $ set def [--]

This until I make a patch kit that will fix it.
