Subject: Another Killer Page

I've discovered another web page (with a form) that's guaranteed to kill
XMosaic, which I just downloaded and compiled yesterday. The form page is
Digital's public patch service at http://www.service.digital.com:8031/ . The
patch I wanted was for VAXDRIV04_071. When this is entered in the query box,
(and OpenVMS Readmes highlighted), and the "Submit Query" button is clicked,
the Digital database presents a new page saying that the search string doesn't
exist. (But it does!)

So, if you then hit the XMosaic back button and try another string, you
discover XMosaic crashes on the 2nd click of the Submit Query button.

My setup is VMS/VAX V7.1, UCX 4.1 ECO 8.

This will be fixed in the next release. There is a new HTMLLISTS.C
in the ftp area which has a workaround for the problem.

I don't know if this will help, but the crash does not occur with
Mosaic compiled and linked with DECC V5.7004 on OpenVMS V6.2-H3 using
TGV Multinet V3.5 Rev A-X.

The search indeed fails (while it succeeds with Netscape
and points on .../?categories=All_Databases&query_string=vaxdriv04_071), and the
command line command
$ mosaic http://www.service.digital.com:8031/?categories=All_Databases&query_string=vaxdriv04_071

opens the same empty page. Would it be the /? syntax screwing up ???

The workaround only corrects the crash. I don't have a fix for the
search problem. The crash was introduced by an HTMLLISTS.C released
after V3.0b6, so it will not appear in all V3.0b6 executables.

In any the case, the next release will be out as soon as I can track
down a few more bugs including the search problem.

There is a new beta release of VMS Mosaic at

ftp://alpha.wvnet.edu/mosaic/test/mosaic3_0b7.zip

It includes the following changes:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
o Improved line spacing between headers, paragraphs, tables, etc.
o Improved table width and height calculations
o Improved vertical alignment of text, images and widgets
o Improved support for forms in tables
o Restored support for vertical (TOP, BOTTOM, MIDDLE) image alignment
o Added support for VALIGN in <TR> and <TD> tags
o Added support for ALIGN in <TR> tags
o Added support for NAME (target anchors) in anchor tags
o Added optional tracking of visited target anchors
o Added support for WIDTH=percent in <TD> tags
o Added support for VSPACE in <IMG> tags
o Added support for <OPTION> tags with no VALUE
o Added support for BOTTOM in <CAPTION> tags
o Added skipping of <SCRIPT> and <STYLE> tag contents
 o Added optional debugging menu
 o Added reportBugs trace option
o Various bug fixes and workarounds for bogus HTML

This will probably be the last beta release of 3.0. One issue I have
been unable to resolve is that www.altavista.digital.com comes up in
text mode even if the graphics version is explicitly requested. I
have contacted altavista support several times with no luck. The
workaround is to have Mosaic "spoof" the altavista server by claiming
to be Netscape. This is done by selecting Mozilla in the spoof agents
sub-menu on the Options menu.

If multiple people contact altavista about the problem, they might
correct it. They need to accept "VMS_Mosaic/3.0" as a valid graphical
user agent.

George,

Thanks for the new version and your continuous work on VMS-Mosaic in

I haven't tried it out yet, but when I tried to compile (under OpenVMS

I'd be interested in knowing what the warnings were along with the version
of DEC C.

There is a new PREFS.C file in the ftp area which corrects this problem.

George,

Thanks for the quick reply! I have now recompiled, and after trying a
few sites I have to say that this version was really a big leap
forward! Not that I really care for frames, but this was the first
time some of the sites looked all right. Also the formatting around
lists etc. is much improved. Thanks again!

The compilation warning in HTTCP.C is just a slight glitch:

Subject: Problem with text="color" in <BODY> with Mosaic 3.0b7

Hi all,

I've noticed a small problem with Mosaic 3.0b7 (built with DEC C 5.0 / VMS 6.2)

The color of text described in a <BODY> tag is not always honored. You can try
the url:

  http://www2.cenaath.cena.dgac.fr/~pmoreau/audio/midi.html

where <body> looks like:

<BODY bgcolor="#f8f8f8" background="/bg/notebookg.gif" text="#0000a0">

Best Regards,

Patrick

You need to get the replacement PREFS.C from the ftp area.

There is a new HTMLFORMAT.C in the ftp area which corrects this problem.

Nothing has changed in regard to frames since 3.0b3. The display of the
"No Frames" information will be somewhat improved in the next release.

To do frames properly will require a major rework of the Mosaic GUI.
The only other solution is to throw up a bunch of cloned Mosaic windows
(one for each frame); this might be okay for a page with just two or three
frames, but some pages have six or more.

What an excellent idea. (:-) This allows us to hit the X button on
all the ads and worthless banners taking up valuable screen real estate,
leaving the useful pages full-frame and (we hope) requiring no horizontal
scrolling. Plus when you bookmark a page, you know what you'll get later.

BTW - I wanted publicly to commend George for the excellent work he's
done with the latest version. I have yet to see this beta crash on me,
it appears to be faster, and the new/improved table alignment is working
as authors intended.

Oh, and I think AltaVista feeding me it's text form page is just wonderful...
No ads!

I do need to update the messages in MAKE_MOSAIC.COM. Did the build work okay
otherwise?

Subject: OT: HotJava on VMS

Just in case any of you would like to have a 3rd alternative browser for VMS,
the Java geniuses at Digital have a JDK V1.1.6 beta available for Alpha which
allows HotJava to work. I had to consult with them to figure out the proper
startup procedure and a workaround to a problem that will only be rectified
in the final JDK. My contact at Digital was Powell Hazzard. Thanks Powell!

Here's my suggested HOTJAVA_VMS.COM file. I think it contains most everything
you need to get HotJava going on VMS.
