Hi,
well a list of one :)
When image loading is delayed I would like to see either the name of
the image or the alt label associated with the image.

Subject: Netscape question

Hello,

Apologies in advance to George. I love Mosaic (it was my first
browser!), and I insist that we keep it around, but I have to
   provide other browsers too.

Since I think I saw the answers on this list before, and since I
can't find them on the Digital Netscape site I thought I'd ask
   here:

     1. It there a mailing list specifically for VMS Netscape?

     2. Netscape Navigator Gold version 3.03 on our DAC (Data Analysis Center)
VAX cluster consistently gives an error box with the following text:

"A network error occurred while Netscape
             was receiving data.
            ("Network Error: Connection aborted)
             Try connecting again."

on some sites such as http://www.theory.caltech.edu/ and I
cannot get this page to load on this Netscape. Mosaic on
the same VAX cluster has no problem with this site.

   Anybody know the fix? Thanks.

The page loads fine with Netscape on both our VAX and Alpha systems with
MultiNet V4.1. What TCP/IP package are you using? Some (including
earlier versions of MultiNet) have problems with their UCX emulation.
Netscape is now a supported part of DECwindows (i.e. Customer Support
will talk with you about it assuming you have an appropriate support
contract).

We used to have this error with Multinet TCPIP vs 3.5 . This is fixed
by a UCX$IPC_SHR patch provided by CISCO. Check out their site if this is your
problem. The problem has been removed in Multinet V4.0 .

Subject: Flaky printing

Hi,
	http://www.investorama.com/features/ssg_007.html causes some problems.
Neither netscape 3.03 for VMS or mosaic 3.0b5 print it as it shows up
on the browser. It uses inline images to present tables. When printed
the tables are superimposed on the text. (Netscape doesn't even include
a couple of them).

BUT mosaic 2.6-2 works just fine.

My html knowledge simply is not up to figuring out if there is something
wrong with the page or if the browsers really should be able to print it
correctly. Again they do display it correctly.

Postscript printing is broken in Mosaic 3.0. It will probably be fixed to
at least properly print pages without tables at some point after the final
3.0 release.

	Hello George,

I've noticed that AltaVista accessed with Mosaic, now displays the
images and all. Actually, I loved the previous behavior where only text was
displayed (so fast) ... Would you know How to get it back to a
commercial/image-less version ?

Same here. You can still do this the long way as follows:

This could be placed in the hotlist to make it easy to use.

Another way would be to add Lynx to the list of Agent Spoofs and then
select it. AltaVista still auto-detects Lynx as a text only agent.
This would also work with any other service which auto-detects Lynx
as being text only.

o Maintains correct base URL for edited documents
 o Deletes editor temporary files
o Eliminated underlining of space preceeding anchors
o Restored support for <LISTING> tag
o Improved display of <NOFRAMES> information
o Improved line spacing of pre-formatted text
o Corrected the colors "gray", "green" and "purple" per HTML 3.2
o Added the colors "silver", "olive", "teal", "aqua" and "fuchsia"
o Improved support for WIDTH=percent in <TD> tags
o Added Lynx and MSIE to spoof agents menu
o Added support for space as a "coords" delimiter in <AREA> tags
o Upgraded ZLIB library to version 1.1.2
o Added build support for latest Motif 1.2-3 ECO kits

Hi VMS-Mosaic Users,

My first build of 3.0b8 on Alpha (OVMS V6.2, Motif 1.2-3, Multinet 4.0B,
DECC 5.6) was flawless (Thx George). So far everything is looking great!
Even the postscript printing of two tables showed better alignment of text
(but not images & text fields on the form) than my previous version. Have
there been changes in 3.0b8 to improve ps printing?

Thanks and best regards,

Jim Jennis

No, the postscript printing uses the same formatting elements as the
display window. Any changes to the alignment, etc. on the screen will
have an impact on postscript printing for better or worse. This is
one reason no work has been done on postscript printing; any improvements
would just be broken by later display changes. Once the display stuff
is more stable, then work can be done on postscript printing.

I just got the B8 version. Thanks a million once again George for the
work. To do some "commercial" for Mosaic, I've notice that animated GIF are
much much faster with Mosaic than Netscape while much nicer CPU wise

( actually, I am not sure what Netscape is doing with those images but a user
opened a page with one animated gif once, and netscape sucked 90% of the CPU
 time ... :( ).

I'll test this version a little bit more and let you know if I find
oddities ...

A suggestion, now that mosaic supports gif animations: Please add a "stop"
button to stop the animations from moving, once one has seen enough! Or, you
could add this functionality to the big globe button, since it already is
an abort button for data transfers. (Although this function is certainly
not obvious.) I know I can disable animations in the options menu, but this
is something different: halting distracting animations after I'm done
looking at them.

As always, thanks for the nice job keeping mosaic going...

There is a new GUI.C in the ftp area which adds this function to the
logo (globe) button. There is also a new HTMLIMAGES.C which fixes an
animation refresh problem.

Netscape (at least V 3.03) seems to re-read indefinitly the gif file during the
animation !! A good example of PC programming techniques ?

On my MIDI on VMS page at url
http://www2.cenaath.cena.dgac.fr/~pmoreau/audio/midi.html
on a DEC 3000-300 , the animated loudspeakers suck about 15% CPU with Mosaic
3.0b8 and 75% with Netscape 3.03 !! And with Mosaic the anim is faster ...

Thank you Georges !!

At least in the initial 2.x Netscape GIF animation support, this was done
to conserve memory. Netscape 4.0 on a Pentium II/MMX is still not able
to run animations at full speed and seems to do at least some disk I/O.
Unfortunately, this means that Mosaic may run some animations faster
than intended by web page designers (i.e. the designers don't realize
that the animation speed specified in the GIF is not the speed they
are seeing). I've seen at least one case of this where an animation
was spinning too fast to read (it was slow enough to read on Netscape
and Internet Explorer).

The preference MIN_ANIMATION_DELAY can be used to slow Mosaic down.
It specifies the minimum delay between animation images in units
of 1/100 second. The default is 1.

Take a look at http://www.stud.ee.ethz.ch/~skasper/Frames.htm and the
additional GIF page linked off it. When Netscape is displaying it from
an Alpha 4000 5/466 to a DEC 3000-300LX, the DEC 3000-300LX is barely
able to do anything else.

Hi George (and VMS-Mosaic Colleagues)!

This is not so much a bug report as a "Performance Report".

I have attached the html code for a fairly complex form that I use for one
of our product evalution teams. Mosaic 3.0b8 displays the form "almost
perfectly" (the table borders do not display as they do with Netscape). The
scrolling speed of this form is VERY SLOW even running on a fast Alpha box.

Best Regards,

Jim

There is a new HTMLTABLE.C in the ftp area which corrects the table border
problem. There are also new HTML.C and HTMLWIDGETS.C files which at
least make the form scrolling look better and perhaps even speed it up
some.

Hello,

In Mosaic 3.0b8 the <Caption> command is not interpreted correctly:
see my command: <caption align=3Dcenter>Table Complexe</caption>

The text of the title is not centered? but by default
<caption>Table Complexe</caption> is centered(?)

In this exemple:

<center>
<table border>
<caption align=3Dcenter>Table Complexe</caption><tr>
<th rowspan=3D2><th colspan=3D2>moyenne<th
rowspan=3D2>autres<br>cath=E9gorie<tr>
<th width=3D30%>hauteur <th width=3D30%>largeur <tr>
<th align=3Dleft width=3D30%>males <td width=3D30%>1.9 <td width=3D30%>0.=
003 <td
width=3D30%>yyy <tr>
<th align=3Dleft width=3D30%>femelles <td width=3D30%>1.7 <td width=3D30%=
>0.002
<td width=3D30%>xxx <tr>
</table>
</center>

The result for me is not visible with Mosaic. Netscape does it well.

In the different tag <ul> and </ul> mixed with <a href> the color blue
is not stopped and a confusion is observed with the links.

Many thank for your effort.

Alain.

I forgot to mention that the other new files (in particular HTMLP.H)
in the ftp area are also needed. The change to HTMLP.H was unrelated
to the above fixes.

"align" is currently not supported in <Caption> tags, however any
surrounding alignment (e.g. <center>) will align the caption.

Subject: Page appearance -- images

	The code

<img align=left src="images/rootart.gif" HEIGHT="345" WIDTH="47">
<img align=right src="images/rootart.gif" HEIGHT="345" WIDTH="47">
<center><h1><font size="+4">The ROOT System</font></h1></center>
...

in http://root.cern.ch/ does show the title and text in
between the left and right image with NEtscape but does not with mosaic. I also
tried <H1 align="center"> but it does not work neither.

Looking at the above code (and the full code in the pointed document) I
actually do not understand why it appears that way with Netscape but it is
obvious that this was the intent.

Is there something missing in Mosaic then or is it yet another
Netscapism I am seing there ???
