Thanks, George!! Now, when can we expect Mosiac to handle access through
proxy servers that require usernames/passwords?

(If I knew where to look and knew the C language, I'd do it myself.)

George,

I just came across a problem with the way Mosaic handles preformatted text.
The following html code ilustrates the problem:

<pre>
This is line 1: the width is <= 80 characters
This is line 2.
</pre>

I tried this with Mosaic V3.0b8 and the recently released V3.0. In either case,
nothing is displayed after the text "The width is " on line 1, nor are any
following lines displayed. It seems that Mosaic is trying to interpret the "<="
as html, and getting confused. Netscape displays it correctly.

BTW, I'd love to see Mosaic distributed via the VMS freeware CD, but I'd be
even happier if frame support could be added before that happens.

Thanks!

Assuming the progress message Mosaic gives is:

    Unsupported Proxy authorization required

then the code is in [.LIBWWW2]HTTP.C at the "case 407:" statement. The
Lynx code (which does support proxy servers, as far as I can tell) starts
at the same location in the Lynx sources.

I could try adding proxy server support, but I have no way at all to
test it here.

The problem (at least the way I read the specifications) is that the
example is not valid HTML (the "<=" should be "&lt;="). In any case,
there is a new HTMLPARSE.C in the ftp area which handles the sequence
the same as Netscape.

The next freeware CD submission deadline is in several weeks, so frame
support will definitely not make it.

Subject: RE: Mosaic V3.0 now available

I just built VMS Mosaic 3.0 on my Alpha/VMS 7.1/Motif 1.2-3(I know, it's out
of date!). I was impressed by the changes, especially since the last version
I was running was 2.7. One thing doesn't seem to work though: if I set Mosaic
up to use a preferences file, make some changes, and then save the prefs, it
crashes the next time I run it because prefs.c doesn't expect to see these two
lines...

IMAGE_ANIMATION: True
MIN_ANIMATION_DELAY: 1

...before the REFRESHTRACE line. It was easy enough to fix, but I thought I
ought to say something about it.

One more thing: I'm using nedit as my default editor rather than a decterm-
based editor. Unfortunately by the time nedit gets cranked up (to edit an
HTML page) the temporary html file it's looking for doesn't exist. If I run
it with EDIT_COMMAND_USE_XTERM set to "True" (which it shouldn't need since
nedit is a self-contained x11 app) it works but gives me a useless xterm
(i.e. DECterm) window. Has anybody solved this one yet? If not I'll go ahead
and diagnose/fix it myself.

Thanks!

There is a new PREFS.C in the ftp area which fixes this problem. It was
a simple cut and paste error.

Have you tried setting EDIT_COMMAND to "nedit" (assuming that nedit is
a valid command at the DCL prompt) and EDIT_COMMAND_USE_XTERM to "False"?
If you type nedit at the DCL prompt does it detach or spawn the editor
window? If it spawns, does it do /NOWAIT? If so, can it be set to do
/WAIT?

Mosaic doesn't give me a progress message. What I get is the following:

>Enter your Username and/or your Password.
>If you are using a challenge/response mechanism then just enter your
Username

This appears in Mosaic's main window. Navigator pops up a separate box with
the text "Proxy authorization required for Enter Username and/or Password at
enterprise.si.com:80" (enterprise is our firewall) with "User ID" and
"Password" text widgets, an OK button, a Clear button, and a Cancel button.
if I choose "Cancel", Navigator displays exactly what Mosaic displays. MSIE
pops up a separate box with the text "Please enter your authentication
information", a line that says "Resource: Enter Username and/or Password",
text widgets for "Username" and "Password", an "OK" button, a "Cancel"
button, and a check box for "Save this password in your password list". If
I enter nothing, MSIE keeps popping up that same box over and over. If I
choose "Cancel", MSIE displays exactly what Mosaic displays. Lynx puts a
prompt on the prompt line of the screen and asks for username and password.

I'd like Mosaic to pop up a prompt box, too.

In order to see what is happening, please do:

1. Enable the preference file.

2. Edit it and set DEBUG_MENU to True.

3. Start Mosaic and get to the point right before getting the message.

4. Enable HTTPtrace on the debug menu.

5. Proceed to get the message and capture Mosaic's DECterm output.

6. Repeat step three.

7. Enable WWW2trace on the debug menu.

8. Repeat step five.

9. Send me the captured output.

Yesterday I FTP'ed Mosaic 3.0, compiled and linked it. No problems.
I am now trying it out. I compare it with the previous version 2.7-5.
I see quite some improvemenst, in particular in the handling of images and the
presentation. I have some remarks (in order of importance).

1) I like the table support and the frame choice (as in Lynx), could you also
add a Refresh link (as in Lynx)?

2) When reading news I cannot longer see which articles have been read earlier.
In version 2.7-5 these articles where kept in the global-history, just as other
links, and they were shown with a different color. Now in version 3.0 all news
articles have the same color, which makes it difficult for me to select the
article that I have not yet read. Is this a bug or a feature?

3) I would probably also have liked the preferences support, if it worked. But
it does not work. After choosing Preferences in the Options menu and then
Saving preferences in the File menu, I am not longer able to startup Mosaic:

$ run KVI$ROOT:[KVIMAIN.WWW.MOSAIC3_0.SRC]MOSAIC.EXE_AU;1
Error: Preference file corrupted
Found preference IMAGE_ANIMATION: when expecting REFRESHTRACE:
%SYSTEM-F-ABORT, abort

Yesterday I FTP'ed Mosaic 3.0, compiled and linked it. No problems.
I am now trying it out. I compare it with the previous version 2.7-5.
I see quite some improvemenst, in particular in the handling of images and
the
presentation. I have some remarks (in order of importance).

1) I like the table support and the frame choice (as in Lynx), could you also
add a Refresh link (as in Lynx)?

2) When reading news I cannot longer see which articles have been read
earlier.
In version 2.7-5 these articles where kept in the global-history, just as
other
links, and they were shown with a different color. Now in version 3.0 all
news
articles have the same color, which makes it difficult for me to select the
article that I have not yet read. Is this a bug or a feature?

3) I would probably also have liked the preferences support, if it worked.
But
it does not work. After choosing Preferences in the Options menu and then
Saving preferences in the File menu, I am not longer able to startup Mosaic:

$ run KVI$ROOT:[KVIMAIN.WWW.MOSAIC3_0.SRC]MOSAIC.EXE_AU;1
Error: Preference file corrupted
Found preference IMAGE_ANIMATION: when expecting REFRESHTRACE:
%SYSTEM-F-ABORT, abort

Work does need to be done in this area, but it will probably not happen
in the near future.

There is a new GLOBALHIST.C file which corrects this problem in the
Mosaic anonymous ftp directory.

The fix for this is contained in the zip file PATCH1.ZIP in the Mosaic
anonymous ftp directory.
