Some records in smaller towns were destroyed in wartime. In many cases you will find things like "third child born in this village this year was" instead of precise birthday. Military records are good (in many cases verbal descriptions instead of photographs). Look also for oral history (in some cases good up to a century back - Greeks placed value in passing on family stories orally) and for letters with immigrants (a huge number of Greeks, I think one out of five, had at least worked in the USA a century ago - but you might not find them in ship logs because they were often stowaways). However, as Greece has very mountainous and largely unusable land, Greeks are not prone to keep good records, even the dead are exumed and their remains kept in boxes in the church rather than remain permanently in cemetaries. -- Vasos-Peter John Panagiotopoulos II, Columbia'81+, Bioengineer-Financier, NYC BachMozart ReaganQuayle EvrytanoKastorian http://WWW.Dorsai.Org/~vjp2 vjp2@{MCIMail.Com|CompuServe.Com|Dorsai.Org} ---{Nothing herein constitutes advice.
