Koberg) KO>My niece recently married into a family of Lebanese descent. Her new KO>sister-in-law is beginning to think about a genealogical search. Knowing my KO>interest in this, they asked me whether I had seen comment concerning KO>tracking ancestors back into that neck of the woods. KO>I haven 't seen the subject mentioned in the newsgroups. Has anyone a KO>comment or suggestion to share with such a beginning searcher? She has two KO>grandmothers who were born in Lebanon and came into the USA early in the KO>20th century. If the Lebanese family is/was Christian in Lebanon, then you use the Church records, just as you would for other nationalities. If the Lebanese family is/was Moslem in Lebanon, you get to find the appropriate Imam or Qadi, and you'll need someone Moslem *IN* Lebanon to tell you how to do that. I don't know. If the Lebanese family is/was Jewish in Lebanon, you'll need either the Congregation's records or the guidance of an extremely good Rabbi -- or possibly both. Whether these last two groups appear in civil records, I do not know. Nor do I know what specific religious records they may have created or kept, or whether they would be legible today. The three Lebanese families I've known were all Christian and none were interested in genealogy. Two of these families had identifiably Moslem surnames. Good luck. * OLX 2.1 TD * Cheryl_Singhal@cpafug.blkcat.com
