Vladimir Volvovich Edelstein was born on April 25, 1946 in Alma Ata, then 
the capital city of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic. His parents were 
Wolf Isaakovich Edelstein (1907-1946), a lawyer of Polish Jewish extraction, 
 and Aleksandra Pavlovna Zhirinovskaya (1912-1985), née Makarova, a Russia. 
Zhirinovsky's father died in an automobile accident when Vladimir was still 
and infant. According to documents found in Alma Ata, Vladimir changed his 
surname to that of his mother's first husband in 1964 to facilitate entrance 
to university studies.
