Try new things!
You learn by doing and experimenting. Also closely watch those who know how to do it right and follow their example and/or take classes in your area. I learned what I know by reading books on related craft and interior decorating subjects, taking classes, watching and listening to different media and getting ideas from other sources like magazines and TV. Second hand stores are often a paradise for Do-It-Yourselfers My hobbies include restoring antique furniture or just old furniture in general. I also like stenciling, reupholstering, painting, quilting and hand sewing.

Creative Crafts

Creative crafts are made of original ideas! A craft can be anything creative that you enjoy working with on a regular or occasional basis.

Tip #1:  When you start on your desired craft project make sure you have the right tools and products.  This makes a big difference to the outcome of your work.  If you paint (decorative painting) make sure your brushes are synthetic and in good condition.  Do not bend the brush tips and do not let the brushes sit in water for a long period of time because your brushes will get ruined if you do this.

Sewing & Quilting

Pin

Use scraps, remnants to make a quilt or pillow!

Keep children's clothes-Use the cloth to make quilts. Memories of a lifetime in a quilt. Traditional American quilts are meant to tell stories within their patterns.

Monogram Pillows-Use old embroidered linen to create a personal pillow.

Stenciling

You can create a stencil out of almost anything! See "STENCIL PATTERNS."

Personal Stencils-Find a picture you like or flower and place a clear see through plastic sheet over the picture and outline the picture with a marker or pen then take a craft knife and cut out the stencil. Stencil a plant pot(kruka), wall, plate, cup, or piece of cloth with the stencil you just created.

Decoupage

Decoupage is the art of making something out of nothing almost using scraps, pieces of paper cut outs, cloth,  dried flowers, even napkins or almost anything you can imagine as long as it can be placed pretty flatly on a surface.  Decoupage is great for planting pots just be sure to waterproof the pot if you put it outside in the garden.  The main and most important ingredient in decoupage is "decoupage finish" this seals and glues your project.

(Craft Project 2) Place the finish under the cut out paper your working on or on the surface that you will place the paper on afterwards.  Place the paper on the surface then put one coat of finish over the paper.  Let dry then if you want place a clear coat of lacquer over the project to seal it.  If you use napkins for Decoupage its a good idea to paint the item your working on the same color as the napkin so the colors will come out more vibrant.

(Craft Project #3) Dried flowers can have many uses and can also be used for decoupage on plants or almost anything.  Cut flowers that can be flattened easily from your garden and place them face down in a thick hard cover book or in the middle of a phone book.  Wait until the flowers have dried completely then place then on whatever object you would like to decoupage using decoupage glue.  For outdoor use be sure to put a clear coat of lacquer over the object you put the flowers on.

(Craft Project #4) You can also use dried flowers to decorate other things like wooden mirrors or wooden coat hangers for instance.   The type of coat hangers with pegs protruding from them.

The best types of flowers to use for these projects are flowers that can be flattened easily.  It is also possible to just use petals in these projects.  Flowers like buttercups, petunia, daisies, etc.

Painting Techniques

Painting can give a new look to a room or item! Paint Bucket

Marbling Effect - (Craft Project 1) This technique takes practice. Take a sponge (natural kind) and a piece of tile.  On the tile squirt paint in circular patterns with the colors you want to use.Black & White for black marble and green and white for green marble.  Then dab the sponge in a vertical position only onto the surface your painting.  Never twist the sponge when applying paint and replace the paint on the tile regularly.  After the surface is finished take a birds feather and dip the fringes into white paint to create natural looking lines.

Use Stencil Patterns to make a pattern on a wall. Repeat the stencil in desired areas. The stencil should fit the theme of the room its in.

Sponge - Use a sponge to create a soft effect on walls or furniture.

Crafts for Kids

Instructions on how to make a piņata for a kids party!

Recipe:

  • 2 cups of flour
  • Newspaper strips
  • 1 large balloon (can use light cardboard also)
  • Colored tissue paper cut in strips
  • inches of string or wire
  • A baseball bat or thick long stick
  • A scarf to use as a blindfold

Instructions: In a bowl mix the flour with water until you get a glueish type of consistency.  Blow up the balloon and tie a string around the end where you blew up the balloon. Secure it to an object or chair.  Dip newspaper strips in flour paste and place them over the balloon, cover the balloon with newspaper strips completely.Apply 2 or more layers of newspaper strips.   Its best to let one layer dry at a time!!!  Allow ample time to dry all layers! Pop the balloon and it should leave a rounded form.  Or use light cardboard for other diverse forms.  Cut edges of tissue paper to get a ruffled look on the piņata.  Be sure to leave a hole in the base where you can put the candy in.   Be creative!  Create ears, hair, fire, arms, legs  out of colored paper and toilet paper rolls.

You can make different types of pinatas your imagination is the limit. But here are a few ideas to help.

  • Animals
  • Fruit/Pumpkin for Halloween
  • Kite or a rocket
