Any info or anything published that I could refer them to? I have a copy of "Background of a Bandit, The Ancestry of Jesse James." This has most of Jesse's cousins in it, including the one he married! Would be happy to check it for particulars. Tell your friend not to hold his breath; it is a common tradition among most any family that has a JAMES in the family tree or the surname of one of the others who rode with Frank and Jesse (some of who were relatives) to believe "we're related to Jesse James. I became interested in the JAMES family ancestry after reading in one of the books about them that the were relatives to Bud (Thomas Edward) and Donnie (Alexander Doniphan) PENCE (who were third cousins to my great grandfather, Curtis Monroe PENCE). Bud and Donnie were, along with Frank and Jesse, members of Quantrill's Raiders during the Civil War and also were identified along, with Frank and Jesse, in the first daylight robbery of a U.S. bank at Liberty, Missouri, in 1866. After this robbery, the PENCEs fled from Clay Country, Missouri, to Nelson County, Kentucky. Bud was caught by the Pintertons, but the governor of Kentucky refused to extradite him and he "mysteriously" escaped, no doubt with the aid of authorities. The PENCE brothers married SAMUELS sisters in Nelson County and Donnie was the sheriff or deputy for 30 years, during which time his home was a haven for Frank and Jesse. Once Jesse carved his initials and the date in a window pane at PENCE's house as proof he didn't participate in a robbery the day before in Kansas. This pane is now in the Kentucky Historical Society at Frankfort. One book about Jesse James suggests that a relationship between the two families existed, perhaps through Frank and Jesse's stepfather, Dr. Rueben SAMUEL, and the wives (SAMUEL_S_ sisters) of Bud and Donnie PENCE. Extensive research indicates this is probably not true. Their lifelong friendship no doubt arose because they were boyhood friends, with the PENCE farm being directly across the road from the JAMES farm in Clay County. They grew up together, fought in the Civil War together and alledgedly robbed banks together. And when Nelson County Sheriff A.D. (Donnie) PENCE died in 1896, among those at his funeral was Frank JAMES. Not too many years ago some of the few authenticated pictures of Quantrill and Frank and Jesse were found among the effects of a granddaughter of Bud Pence and these, too, have been donated to the Kentucky Historical Society. In the fall of 1984 I had the pleasure of speaking on the possible relationships between the PENCE family and the JAMES family at the annual meeting of "the Friends of the James Farm." Great fun! The stuff that adds the spice to genealogy. Have your friend provide details and we'll see what we can come up with. P.S.: I didn't know anything about the above Bud and Donnie PENCE when, one summer in the 1950s, my brother, Donnie, worked baling hay near our home in South Dakota for a farmer named Frank James and his son - Jesse! My brother was great at deadpanning that he once "worked for Frank and Jesse James." --------- Fidonet: Richard Pence 1:109/356.3565 Internet: Richard.Pence@p3565.f356.n109.z1.fidonet.org Article 64325 of soc.roots: Path: news.kth.se!sunic!pipex!howland.reston.ans.net!news2.near.net!news.delphi.com!usenet From: irgraffman@delphi.com Newsgroups: soc.roots Subject: Re: Jesse James Genealogy? Somehow the message got deleted just as I was looking up the information and responding. I recall that the name James Wood was in the message and that name also appears on the charts of the various ancestors of Jesse that are listed in the book "Background of a Bandit: The ancestry of Jesse James." This James Wood was married to Keziah Poor, three of whose siblings married into the Mimms family. Jesse James' wife was Zerelda Mimms, herself a first cousin to Jesse. No dates given for James Wood and no further information, but it appears that his generation was born in the 1750s. His wife's brother, Robert Corner Poor (born 1755), married Elizabeth Woodson Mimms. This couple's daughter, Mary Poor, married John James, and they were Jesse's grandparents. It appears from my memory of what was in the message you sent that the above James Wood _could_ have been the grandfather of the James --- Wood you mentioned. If that were the case, he would have been a first cousin to Jesse's father, Robert James. If there was another generation involved, then James --- Wood would have been Jesse's second cousin. The charts in this book are very confusing and I haven't quite figured out all the Mimms relationships. However, it appears that Mary James, Robert's sister, married John W. Mimms, whose ancestry isn't given. Thus Zerelda Mimms, the daughter of John W. Mimms and Mary James, was a first cousin on to Jesse on the James side and not on the MImms side (although there could be a relationship there also!). Not much there, but a start. It appears that what needs to be done next is the documentation of the John Wood line. By the way, the families above were from kentucky. --------- Fidonet: Richard Pence 1:109/356.3565 Internet: Richard.Pence@p3565.f356.n109.z1.fidonet.org Article 64666 of soc.roots: Path: news.kth.se!sunic!uunet!europa.eng.gtefsd.com!howland.reston.ans.net!math.ohio-state.edu!caen!hearst.acc.Virginia.EDU!freenet.vcu.edu!freenet.vcu.edu!not-for-mail From: ahunter@freenet.vcu.edu Newsgroups: soc.roots Subject: Re: Jesse James Date: 1 Dec 1994 23:23:21 -0500 Organization: Central Virginia's Free-Net Lines: 8 Distribution: world Message-ID: <3bm7fp$g86@freenet.vcu.edu> NNTP-Posting-Host: freenet.vcu.edu According to "Jesse and Frank James: The Family History", Jesse and Frank's Poor and James grandparents were from Goochland Co, VA - not Kentucky.
