oops, I should correct myself. Any version of libtool will compile
libraries with static libraries provided you use a convenience library
(eg. see libvers).  Convenience libraries are any libraries managed by
libtool that do not get installed.

however, in this particular situation, none of the libraries are
convenience libraries (they get installed), so this doesn't apply.
