There's a patch for it at openwall, which I assume is what you mean.
As far as I can tell, the latest version of the John distribution
itself only does AFS keys.

How about posting the reference?  I can't find it, and it's not at all
clear to me what the patch expects.  Also it seems only to deal with
DES3.
